DAVE MAYBEE Dave was born in 1952 into a musical tradition in Wellington, New Zealand. His introduction to musical performance was singing in choirs and at gatherings with his immediate family. He got his first guitar around 8 years old, a white f-hole laminated maple arch-top ‘original Arnold Hoyer’ acoustic. As an adult he studied music composition at Waikato University (NZ) graduating with a BA(mus) until that time however he was self taught albeit a lesson from a Paco Pena trained flamenco guitarist.
Throughout his high school years in the late 1960's he performed locally at school dances, balls & functions with his own trio of piano, drums, guitar/bass & vocals and played regularly in outlying rural areas with an 'old-time dance band' at Caledonian Society functions & country dances.
From the 1970's onwards he worked extensively throughout New Zealand and abroad as a professional guitarist, singer and musical director and has performed & recorded in the many differing fields of jazz, classical, country, western swing, pop, rock, folk & blues. Regarded by a NZ music magazine as "one of the country's best kept secrets", he has toured with numerous acts including blues maestro Midge Marsden; he was a founding member of the Raglan based line-up the Legendary Mudsharks about whom the TVNZ documentary "Raglan by the Sea" was based; one third of country-cowboy-folk outfit the Saddleblasters with country-folk balladeer John (Hore) Grenell & cowboy country singer-songwriter Neil Hersey; an original member of successful Latin-Jazz fusion group Torch Songs and half of the acclaimed guitar based (Acoustic Spirit) musical collaboration of Peter Skandera & Dave Maybee with whom he has recorded and performed with in Germany & throughout New Zealand.
He has also performed in the USA, Norfolk Island & Australia with several groups & artists including country 'hard-man' Kimball Brisco Johnson, as sixth man of South Island based country & blues band the Coalrangers & with piano thumpin country boogie 'wild-man' Ritchie Pickett with whom he formed the Inlaws. Over the past 35 years there have also been countless concerts, festivals & gigs with the likes of country-blues singer-songwriters Al Hunter, Rick Steele, country legends Patsy Riggir, Brendan Dugan, Jody Vaughn and renowned guitarist & impressario Gray Bartlett.
In addition he has featured as a country-blues artist on TVNZ, RNZ & other stations and his various roles as producer, sound & recording engineer, musical director, arranger, composer and accomplished session player on electric/acoustic/nylon string guitars, bass guitar, mandolin, dobro & slide guitar, keyboards & percussion for many albums and radio programmes reads like a who's who of Kiwi music.
Of special note:
Peter Skandera & Dave Maybee “Acoustic Spirit” (P&D) Finalist 1996 NZ Music Awards, Folk Album of the Year
Coalrangers “Coast to Coast” (FRONT PORCH MUSIC) Winner 1997 NZ Music Awards, Country Record of the Year
John (Hore) Grenell “Windstar Aotearoa” (ODE) Winner 1991 NZ Music Awards, Country Record of the Year
Ritchie Pickett “Gone For Water “(RCA) Winner 1985 NZ Music Awards, Country Record of the Year
Dave is a multi-instrumental artist with a wealth of compositional & production skills honed through extensive experience. Whether performing solo, collaborating in a group situation, recording in a studio environment or teaching guitar, it is always evident that Dave is an accomplished musician with a deep passion for all musics.
This diversity of expression will be shared in a long awaited 'solo' album currently in production that will feature the 'many shades' of himself both as composer & musician.
